What Is Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy?

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is a broad term describing therapeutic approaches in which a psychoactive medicine is used within a structured process that may include screening, preparation, professional support, and integration. The medicine alone is not the entire treatment. The setting, therapeutic relationship, expectations, preparation, and follow-up may all influence the experience and its meaning.

01

Preparation

Preparation typically includes screening for physical and psychological readiness, discussion of goals and expectations, review of current medications and health history, informed consent, and clarification of the potential benefits, limits, and risks of a supported experience.

02

The Supported Experience

Research and regulated models generally emphasize a safe setting, trained professional support, careful observation, and respect for the individual's experience. The therapeutic relationship, environment, and quality of support are considered essential elements of care.

03

Integration

Integration helps a person examine the experience afterward, identify meaningful insights, and consider how those insights might relate to relationships, behavior, symptoms, identity, and everyday life. Integration is often described as where lasting change is cultivated.

04

Psychedelic Therapy Is Not Appropriate for Everyone

Potential risks, contraindications, medication interactions, psychiatric conditions, cardiovascular and other physical health concerns, and individual life circumstances must all be carefully evaluated. These are treatments requiring qualified clinical judgment, not consumer decisions.

05

Different Medicines Are Not Interchangeable

Ketamine, psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ibogaine, mescaline, and other substances have different pharmacology, research histories, safety profiles, legal classifications, and potential therapeutic roles. Educational and clinical discussions should treat each substance on its own terms.
