Regulatory Review
Once research suggests a possible therapeutic benefit, regulators evaluate whether the accumulated evidence supports lawful clinical use. Regulatory review is a deliberate, multi-step process — not a formality — and its outcome shapes how, where, and to whom a treatment may be offered.
Federal Review
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration evaluates investigational medicines through a structured process that considers preclinical data, clinical trial results, manufacturing standards, proposed labeling, and post-market monitoring. Approval decisions rest on whether the benefits of a proposed use outweigh its risks for a defined patient population under defined conditions.
Because most classic psychedelic compounds are currently Schedule I controlled substances under federal law, therapeutic use also depends on actions by the Drug Enforcement Administration and, ultimately, on federal scheduling appropriate to any approved medical use.
State Review
Even when a treatment is federally approved, state law governs how it is prescribed, delivered, and reimbursed. Some states have created narrow, state-specific programs for supervised access to particular psychedelic medicines. Tennessee has not established such a program at this time.
Why This Matters
Regulatory review is what allows a promising research finding to become a lawful, accountable clinical option. Skipping or shortcutting this process — even with good intentions — can expose patients to unnecessary harm and undermines public trust in the entire field.
